🎧 My favourite albums — the records I keep coming back to, whatever year they are from. One of them is pulled to the top each month, plus the playlists I live in.

The essential ones 2 of 11 carry the star — the handful that shaped what I listen to

Boards of Canada

AlbumIDMWarp May 2026

Eighteen tracks, thirteen years after Tomorrow’s Harvest — the first Boards of Canada record since 2013. The campaign started with VHS tapes mailed to fans and a numbers-station single before the album was announced at all.

Favourites10

Six tracks in twenty-five minutes: fractured breakbeats, distorted texture and a lot of low-end pressure. Orens has worked with Max Cooper, and it shows in how much room the sound design gets.

EPBreakbeatOff Corner released 17 Apr 2026

Twenty-eight tracks the band wrote for the game, released two months after it and back when they still went by British Sea Power. The game itself is in the log with five stars.

SoundtrackAmbientGolden Chariot released 23 Dec 2019

The fourth and last Daft Punk record, recorded over four years with session players instead of samplers — Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder and a live rhythm section in place of the machines.

AlbumDiscoColumbia released 17 May 2013

The third record, and the one where the band dropped nu metal for something closer to straight rock. Named after the Doomsday Clock reading of that year.

AlbumAlt rockWarner Bros. released 14 May 2007

Tobin’s sixth record, built from field recordings of everyday objects and animals instead of crate digging — the sources are processed until you cannot hear what they were. The name comes from the foley studio, where film sound is made the same way.

AlbumExperimentalNinja Tune released 5 Mar 2007

The second Boards of Canada album, darker than the first and stuffed with backmasked voices, numbers and cult references buried in the mix.

AlbumIDMWarp released 18 Feb 2002

Recorded over three years while the game was being built, and shipped with the Collector’s Edition. The Tristram guitar is the part everyone remembers.

SoundtrackDark ambientBlizzard released 30 Jun 2000

The debut on Warp: detuned tape loops, half-heard children’s voices and the sound of a documentary you cannot quite place. Everything the duo did after starts here.

AlbumIDMWarp released 20 Apr 1998

The second Prodigy record, written as rave was being legislated out of existence in Britain — the Criminal Justice Bill runs right through it, down to the track named after a sound system. Breakbeat hardcore before the band turned into a rock act.

AlbumBreakbeatXL Recordings released 4 Jul 1994

The debut, assembled from cassette recordings James started making at thirteen. Ambient techno before the genre had a name to give it.
