A classic haunted house story done really well — one old Irish hotel, a lot of folklore and atmosphere, and scares that land exactly when they should. Adam Scott plays a horror writer who came to scatter his parents’ ashes, and it’s the best work he has done on screen. McCarthy builds the whole film out of one location and still keeps it tense the whole time. Slow, quiet horror that actually has a brain — not for people who want jump scares every five minutes.
